Scrambling/Rebuilding: Remixing Media Policy

Scrambling-remixing-media-policy

Motivated by the philosophies of remix culture itself, this workshop is an opportunity to explore the idea of remixing media policy - that is to say the laws that protect and promote artistic and creative freedom and expression. One thing is clear: If we don't do the remixing, someone else will. Creators should be free to create in an environment where their work can flourish, not be held up by gatekeepers who have their own distinct motives.

This workshop will examine the foundations of remix culture itself - what is and why we do it - and then apply these ideas to advocacy around media policy issues. We will specifically examine the policy debate around Net Neutrality and talk about how media policies get made and remixed over time: from the framing debates that shape public opinion and policymaker's perspectives, to the actual language of the law itself. Then we will work to create our own remix of media policy: a policy manifesto of policy principles for remix artists.
